Security Company and Mall Face Scrutiny Over Use of Force and Oversight

A disturbing incident at Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin is under investigation after a viral video surfaced showing a security K-9 biting and latching onto a woman’s leg. The video, which has already reached nearly 3 million views on Facebook, has sparked public outrage and raised serious questions about the use of force by private security and the oversight of security protocols in shopping centers.

The incident occurred on Friday, March 28, around 6:17 p.m., when Wauwatosa police responded to a call about a fight between two groups. While that altercation reportedly ended before officers arrived, the events captured on video are now at the center of a much larger controversy.

The Viral Video

The footage, posted by Jessiano Ortiz, shows a woman—identified later as Amirah Walls—on the ground near a storefront. A security dog is seen lunging and biting her leg, with witnesses heard shouting in disbelief. “The dog bit her,” one bystander says. “I thought they trained them—he ain’t letting go,” another adds.

A security officer, wearing a uniform with a K-9 patch, is seen struggling on the ground, trying multiple times to free the woman from the dog’s grip. Despite several attempts, the dog holds firm until more security personnel arrive to assist. The video ends before the K-9 is removed.

When Wauwatosa police arrived, they were informed by mall security that the fight had ended and the parties involved had left. At the time, no mention of a dog bite was made, and no citations were issued. It wasn’t until the next day that the woman reportedly contacted authorities about the incident.

Legal Action and Public Response

Amirah Walls, the woman seen in the video, is now being represented by civil rights and personal injury attorney B’Ivory LaMarr. According to a statement released by WCP Communications, Walls is undergoing medical treatment for severe complications stemming from the incident.

The statement strongly criticizes the mall’s response and use of security tactics:

“Despite ongoing concerns about teen-related incidents at the mall, Mayfair has failed to implement effective, humane solutions… The excessive use of force by private security and the apparent lack of accountability are both unacceptable and deeply disturbing.”

LaMarr has pledged to pursue justice for Walls and hold all responsible parties accountable. The incident has sparked renewed concern over how private security firms—particularly those deploying K-9 units—are trained and supervised.

Statement from Security Firm

Andy Frain Services, the company contracted to provide security at Mayfair Mall, confirmed the incident but defended the actions of its team. In a statement, the firm said that the K-9 team responded to an act of violence involving four females and was deployed to ensure that no firearms were present.

“No injuries were reported, and all four individuals involved fled the mall before law enforcement arrived. The safety and security of patrons remains the focus at Mayfair Mall,” the statement said.

Critics argue the statement fails to account for the violent takedown and injury now confirmed by Walls’ legal team.

Growing Pressure on Mayfair Mall and Brookfield Properties

The mall’s operator, Brookfield Properties, has not responded to multiple requests for comment. Community members and advocates are demanding transparency about the mall’s use of private security, particularly when it involves armed response or K-9 deployment in response to youth-related incidents.

The incident follows a growing national conversation about the limits of private security authority, especially in public-facing spaces like malls and transit centers.

As public attention intensifies and legal proceedings begin, the case of Amirah Walls may become a flashpoint in discussions around excessive force, racial bias, and oversight in the security industry.
