NEW YORK – Mayor Eric Adams unveiled New York City’s inaugural community hiring effort, leveraging over $1.2 billion in city contracts to create job opportunities for underserved residents. This initiative aims to prioritize local hiring goals across various city procurement contracts, enhancing existing labor agreements and agency-specific employment programs.
The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) issued the city’s first request for proposal (RFP) incorporating community hiring, targeting contracts for security guard and fire safety services citywide. The RFP mandates that 40% of labor hours be fulfilled by individuals residing in NYCHA housing or ZIP codes with at least 15% of residents below the federal poverty line.
“This landmark RFP sets a precedent for inclusive and equitable city contracts,” Mayor Adams stated. “By putting community needs first, we’re paving the way for substantial economic opportunities in neighborhoods that have long been overlooked.”
