Key Duties That Can Save Lives in a Crisis

In the terrifying event of an active assailant on campus—whether armed with a gun, explosive, or simply intent on causing physical harm—Campus Security Officers (CSOs) play a pivotal role in protecting students, staff, and the broader campus community. The way a CSO responds in those critical moments can determine whether lives are lost or saved.

In an upcoming webinar hosted by Campus Safety Magazine, Jacob Milner, School Safety and Security Analyst for the Idaho State Board of Education, will lead an important discussion on the evolving responsibilities of campus officers during an active assailant event. These situations may involve an active shooter, an active bomber, or any individual attempting to carry out a mass casualty attack.

Milner will explore the key actions campus security personnel must take to minimize harm and restore safety. These roles go far beyond basic observation or deterrence—they demand rapid threat identification, strategic decision-making, and close coordination with first responders.

Security Officer Responsibilities in an Active Assailant Scenario

When an assailant enters a campus with the intent to do harm, the first priority for a security officer is early threat detection. This includes spotting suspicious behavior, responding to alarms or panic alerts, and quickly determining whether the situation involves an immediate danger. If a credible threat is identified, information must be rapidly disseminated to campus stakeholders and law enforcement.

Depending on the scenario and department protocol, trained security officers may be expected to engage or attempt to neutralize the threat when appropriate and safe to do so. In many cases, containment or communication is the most viable tactic until law enforcement arrives.

Milner emphasizes that CSOs must also be ready to administer basic first aid to the injured and assist in executing either an evacuation or lockdown procedure. This requires calm under pressure and a deep understanding of the school’s emergency plans.

Once first responders arrive, campus officers assist with scene control, ensuring pathways remain clear for emergency vehicles, securing access points, and guiding medics to those in need. Officers also play a critical role in managing communication lines and preventing misinformation from spreading among students or faculty.

Empowering Campus Officers Through Training and Collaboration

This training session, moderated by Amy Rock of Campus Safety Magazine, is part of a broader effort to empower security professionals with the tools and confidence they need to respond effectively in worst-case scenarios. The discussion will address real-life case studies, current best practices, and the importance of collaborative drills with law enforcement and EMS teams.

Whether the officer is armed or unarmed, their presence and preparedness can make all the difference during an active assailant incident. From issuing warnings and leading lockdowns to providing trauma care and maintaining order, campus security officers are not just witnesses—they are frontline defenders.
