Two teenagers have been charged with capital murder after a shoplifting attempt at a Dallas CVS store led to the fatal shooting of security guard Anthony Egeonu, 39, on January 24, 2025.
The suspects, a 13-year-old and a 15-year-old, were taken into custody the same night, according to Dallas police. Authorities reported that officers responded to the CVS on Main Street around 11:05 p.m. and found Egeonu wounded. He was rushed to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Details of the Shooting
Dallas Interim Police Chief Michael Igo addressed the community in a meeting, revealing that the teenagers first purchased a prepaid cellphone card before allegedly attempting to shoplift. When Egeonu confronted them, a struggle ensued with the 13-year-old, who then pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene in a white Kia.
Authorities believe—but have yet to confirm—that the teens may be linked to additional crimes outside the Dallas area.
Community and Family React
CVS Health released a statement expressing condolences and confirming its cooperation with the police investigation.
“While the victim, Anthony Egeonu, was employed by a third-party security company, he was well-liked by our store and pharmacy employees and served an important role in keeping our colleagues, customers, and patients safe. Our thoughts are with Anthony’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
Egeonu’s wife, Octavia Egeonu, spoke emotionally about her devastating loss during the community meeting.
“I still thought everything was okay because I knew he had his vest on,” she told reporters. “When I got to the hospital, I was not expecting them to tell me they were sorry. I was expecting them to tell me that maybe he was in ICU or maybe he had just been wounded.”
The couple has three children, who are now left without their father.
“How do you tell a 15-year-old your dad won’t be taking you to the father-daughter day? How do you tell my 10-year-old he won’t be at her graduation from elementary, and my 4-year-old who stays up every night to wait on his dad to come home?”
Support for the Egeonu Family
A GoFundMe campaign was launched to support Egeonu’s family, raising over $16,000 as of Wednesday.
“Anthony was not only a dedicated and hardworking individual but also the sole provider for his family,” the fundraiser description states. “Anthony was a beloved figure in our community, known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his loved ones.”
Organizer Jermain Pipkins confirmed that all donations will go directly to Egeonu’s wife and children to assist with living expenses.
The Dallas Police Department continues to investigate the incident, and authorities encourage anyone with additional information to come forward.
