Detectives in Prince George’s County are investigating after a security guard shot and killed a man inside a business late Monday night, according to police.
Just before midnight on Dec. 8, officers with the Prince George’s County Police Department responded to a shooting at the Ebony Inn in the 5300 block of Sheriff Road in the Fairmount Heights area, near the border of Washington, D.C., and Maryland.
There, police found Donald Wayne Hunt, 50, of Waldorf, who had been shot. He died at the scene.
Through an initial investigation, officers learned that Hunt was involved in a fight with several other patrons before the shooting, and that the armed private security guard intervened.
However, while interacting with the customers, the police said the security guard fired his gun, fatally striking Hunt.
Officers recovered a second gun at the scene. Police noted that the second weapon was not the security guard’s.
As investigators continue working to learn what led up to the shooting by conducting additional interviews and collecting evidence, officials urge anyone with information to contact the police.
Detectives are also consulting with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office; however, no charges have been filed at this time.
Larry Recio told DC News Now he used to work at Ebony Inn as a security guard, up until several months ago. He said it’s a popular spot to grab drinks and watch sports. He also said guards there pat down patrons before they enter to keep weapons out of the establishment.
“Things happen in the heat of the moment, you know. The security guard must have felt threatened. He had to protect the whole facility,” said Recio. “This is the world that we live in right now. You’ve got to be prepared for anything.”
DC News Now tried to call the Ebony Inn for comment on Tuesday. The phone number listed for the business online did not connect.
