The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) has partnered with Inter-Con Security to significantly boost safety measures across their transit centers. As part of this initiative, 300 armed security officers have been deployed throughout the valley, starting July 1. This action marks a major step in enhancing security and protecting both drivers and passengers.
Giovanni Carril, reporting near the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), highlighted the increased presence of security personnel. The RTC’s collaboration with Inter-Con Security is a response to growing concerns about safety on public transportation. Tom Atterbury, Director of Security, emphasized that previously, only a limited number of officers were armed. The new deployment includes 300 armed officers, who are now equipped to handle various security tasks.
These officers will play a critical role in responding to security incidents and will actively patrol buses and transit centers. They are also prepared to address situations that may require immediate intervention, ensuring a prompt response to any threats. The enhanced security measures include the installation of panic buttons and advanced AI weapon detection systems at RTC facilities, further bolstering the safety infrastructure.
This increased security presence comes in response to a worrying rise in assaults on drivers and passengers. Atterbury reported a significant decrease in such incidents since the implementation of these new measures. Last year saw 35 assaults on drivers, while this year, there have been only 22 reported incidents. Passenger-related assaults have also declined, with 170 incidents last year compared to 87 this year. The presence of armed security officers has been a key factor in reducing these numbers and improving response times.
The RTC’s efforts are part of a broader trend observed across the nation, where transit systems are grappling with increased incidents of violence. The emphasis on safety and security reflects the RTC’s commitment to providing a secure environment for all its users. The new security personnel will undergo comprehensive training to ensure they are well-prepared to handle a wide range of situations.
As the RTC continues to prioritize safety, passengers can feel more secure knowing that a dedicated and well-trained security team is in place to protect them.
