When bombing suspect Nathaniel McGuire threw a homemade explosive into the lobby of the Santa Maria Superior Court Department 9 on Wednesday, security guard Stephen Neil’s quick actions prevented the suspect from escaping. Neil, who was stationed in Building G at the time, acted swiftly, chasing McGuire and detaining him until law enforcement arrived.

“I was inside the lobby by the security screening station when a man came in shouting about government agents killing thousands of people,” said Neil, 64, a supervisor for Triumph Protection Group, who plans to retire in December. “He threw something into the lobby, and it exploded into a big fireball.”

The explosion, caused by a bag, injured five people and prompted a lockdown of the surrounding area, including nearby schools and businesses. Neil immediately pursued McGuire, catching him as he attempted to flee in his car. “I pulled him out of the car and held him on the ground until officers arrived,” Neil explained. His swift action prevented the suspect from getting away.

Darrel Parker, court executive officer for Santa Barbara County, praised Neil’s efforts, saying, “Steve, from Triumph Security, way to go! Great job today.” The incident occurred at the courthouse entrance, where McGuire threw the explosive from the door without entering the building.

Neil credits his military background and training for his quick response. Having served in the British Army in Belfast in the late 1970s, Neil said his instincts took over. He’s been a security fixture at the courthouse for over 13 years and expressed pride in his team’s preparedness and coordination during the emergency.

Reflecting on the event, Neil emphasized the importance of staying alert. “Complacency will get you hurt. You never know when something like this could happen,” he said, underscoring the importance of vigilance in his line of work.
