NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – The security officer killed in Monday’s mass shooting at an office building on Park Avenue was trying to hit a panic button when he was killed, according to Deputy Mayor Kaz Daughtry.
Aland Etienne was working in the building when he was fatally shot in the lobby of the building that contains offices for Blackstone, the NFL and Rudin Management.
In an interview with PIX11 News, Daughtry said Etienne was trying to hit a panic button that would stop the building’s elevators.
“We believe that he was trying to get to the panic button to summons for police and also to [stop] the elevators to stop them from going upstairs,” Daughtry said.

Loved ones say Etienne worked in the building for seven years and was known for his “friendly attitude.”
The shooter, identified as Shane Tamura, then went up the wrong elevator and shot a woman on the 33rd floor, which is Rudin Management’s offices.
Etienne was not the only victim who tried to help out. An NFL employee who was shot in the lobby called his coworkers to warn them about the shooting. This man has survived the shooting.
Police believe the woman who was fatally shot on the 33rd floor was also trying to get to her desk phone, Daughtry said.
Police received hundreds of 911 calls and texts about the shooting, he said.
“There are just so many different heroes,” Daughtry said.
