A potentially devastating attack was prevented on Sunday morning after a security guard and church staff members acted swiftly to stop an armed gunman outside CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan. Authorities credit their actions with saving numerous lives.
Armed Gunman Opens Fire During Sunday Service
The incident occurred just after 11 a.m. on June 22, 2025. According to the Wayne Police Department, a man identified as 31-year-old Brian Anthony Browning arrived in the church parking lot wearing a tactical vest and carrying a long gun and a handgun. He immediately opened fire as Sunday morning services were underway.

Browning was struck by a vehicle driven by a parishioner attempting to stop him. Although the attacker fired multiple rounds at the vehicle, the quick thinking of both staff and attendees helped delay his approach toward the sanctuary.
As Browning continued his assault, several staff members, including a member of the church’s security team, confronted him. Two individuals returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect before he could enter the building. One of the responders, a member of the security team, was shot in the leg during the exchange. He later underwent surgery and is expected to recover.
Community in Shock, But Grateful
Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong described the actions of church staff as heroic. “We are grateful for the quick response of individuals who prevented a large-scale mass shooting,” he stated during a Sunday press conference.
Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. of CrossPointe Community Church released a statement acknowledging the emotional toll of the event. “Please pray for our healing, the strengthening of our faith, and the continued bond of unity brought about through this shared traumatic experience,” he wrote, also asking for compassion toward Browning’s family.
Officials said that Browning had no criminal history. He was from Romulus, Michigan, and had previously attended services at CrossPointe with his mother, who is a current member. Police indicated that he appeared to be in the midst of a mental health crisis.
Law Enforcement Responds Swiftly
Following the shooting, law enforcement and federal agencies, including the FBI and Michigan State Police, secured the area and launched a full investigation. A bomb-sniffing dog and a bomb squad were also brought in as a precaution. No explosives were found on-site.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that federal teams were on the ground providing investigative support.
The church attack took place in a tense national environment. Just hours earlier, the U.S. military launched strikes that destroyed or heavily damaged three nuclear sites in Iran. While the Department of Homeland Security has warned of increased threats, including cyberattacks and possible retaliatory violence, police say there is currently no evidence connecting the church shooting to these global developments.
Heightened Threats, Heightened Awareness
In response to recent international tensions, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem noted that domestic threats may rise during periods of global instability. “It is our duty to keep the nation safe and informed, especially during times of conflict,” she said in a statement.
Although there is no confirmed link between the church shooting and any broader geopolitical tensions, officials remain on high alert. Public bulletins have urged citizens to report suspicious behavior and highlighted the potential for lone-actor violence.
Security Preparedness Prevents Tragedy
This incident has renewed conversations about the role of private security in safeguarding public spaces like churches. The unidentified security team member at CrossPointe acted decisively, exemplifying the value of trained security personnel in crisis situations.
Churches across the country are reviewing their emergency protocols and evaluating security presence as communities seek to balance openness with safety.
What happened in Wayne, Michigan, could have ended in tragedy for dozens of parishioners. Thanks to the bravery of a few individuals and the presence of trained security, a major loss of life was averted.
