A hospital worker in Canton, Ohio, was shot after a patient reportedly gained control of a security guard’s firearm during a violent encounter on June 27.
The incident took place at Aultman Hospital, where the patient, identified as James Fair, was under observation. According to WOIO, Fair became combative during his stay, prompting an altercation with an armed security officer. Staff Intervened Quickly to Stop the Suspect
Following the gunshot, other staff members swiftly intervened. They managed to disarm Fair and restrain him until police arrived on the scene, WOIO reported. The injured employee received immediate medical attention.
Authorities said Fair was taken into custody and transported to the Stark County Jail. However, his erratic behavior reportedly continued in detention. Police noted that he was “talking to himself, yelling at no one in particular, and repeatedly banging his head against the divider.”
Multiple Charges Filed
Fair now faces several serious charges:
- Three counts of felonious assault
- One count of aggravated robbery
The hospital has since issued a statement via social media assuring the public that the emergency department remains “safe and secure” as the investigation continues. Aultman Health also confirmed it is working closely with law enforcement officials to determine how the event unfolded and prevent similar incidents in the future.
