MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WDJT) – Disturbing footage has surfaced showing security guards at a Wisconsin hotel restraining a man who later became unresponsive and died.

Warning: This story contains details that some readers may find distressing.

The incident involved 43-year-old Dvontaye Mitchell, who was seen on the ground outside the Hyatt Regency Hotel entrance on Sunday afternoon. A witness captured the events on video, showing security guards restraining Mitchell and, at several points, one guard appearing to strike him on the head with an object, producing an audible sound.

“They hit him maybe three or four times,” witness Shawn Moore recounted, noting that he filmed the incident and its aftermath.

According to Moore, the guards were telling Mitchell to “stop resisting,” although Moore observed that Mitchell was not resisting. At one point, a guard seemed to address the person filming, reportedly saying, “This is what happens when a man goes into the ladies’ room,” though this comment has not been officially confirmed.

When police arrived, they found Mitchell unresponsive. Despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead.

Mitchell’s sister, Nayisha Mitchell, described her brother as a “big, loving guy” with a generous heart. She also mentioned that he struggled with mental health issues but had never exhibited behavior like what occurred that day.

Family members expressed concern over how Mitchell would be portrayed, fearing he might be seen as a “crazy, disruptive person.” LaTrisa Giles, a relative, stated, “Maybe that’s what they’re using as their justification, but that’s not justification for someone to end up dead.”

The Hyatt Regency Milwaukee’s general manager issued a statement expressing sadness over the situation and a commitment to cooperating with local authorities during the investigation.

This incident follows a similar case last August, when Isaiah Allen, Moore’s nephew, was fatally shot by an unlicensed security guard at a gas station. Allen’s family had since advocated for stricter regulation and training of private security personnel.

No charges have been filed in Dvontaye Mitchell’s death. While the medical examiner’s office has preliminarily classified the death as a homicide, Milwaukee police have stated that they are not currently conducting a criminal investigation.
