In Waco, Texas, a local nonprofit is making a significant impact on the lives of security officers and their families. Founded by Denise Nicholson, the Charitable Organization for Texas Security Officers (COTSO) was established to provide financial and emotional support to security officers who have been injured or killed in the line of duty.

The organization’s inception was deeply personal for Nicholson, who was moved to action after the tragic loss of an officer close to her. “When my own officer passed away, that was a real eye-opener because I always thought it would never happen to me,” she said, highlighting the often-overlooked dangers faced by security personnel.

One of the officers who benefited from COTSO’s support is Jimmy Parker, a seasoned security professional with 33 years of experience in Waco. Parker’s life took a dramatic turn when he was shot while patrolling a bingo hall. “Security officers only get shot in bad neighborhoods,” Parker remarked, recounting the incident where he was attacked while working at a seemingly safe location. The assailant, attempting to rob a Subway for $50, confronted Parker, leading to a struggle that resulted in Parker being shot.

The aftermath of the incident left Parker unable to work for a year. During this challenging time, COTSO stepped in to provide crucial assistance. The organization helped cover his medical expenses, paid off his car, and even ensured he had food and utilities. Parker expressed his deep gratitude, saying, “They did mean a whole lot and my meals, you know, utilities, they paid my car off… and I just did a lot of great things for me.”

Beyond immediate financial assistance, COTSO is also committed to preventative measures. The organization offers survival training classes and distributes bulletproof vests to security officers. Since its founding in 2018, COTSO has handed out more than 500 vests, a testament to its dedication to enhancing the safety and well-being of security personnel.

To receive support from COTSO, individuals must be licensed security officers in Texas. The application process is straightforward, requiring a simple form submission on the organization’s website. This initiative is part of the nonprofit’s broader mission to support those who risk their lives to protect others.

As the organization continues its vital work, it is also launching a free safety program accepting applicants through the end of September. This program underscores COTSO’s commitment to providing ongoing support and resources to security officers and their families.

Through compassionate initiatives and practical assistance, the Charitable Organization for Texas Security Officers stands as a beacon of hope and resilience for the community, proving that even in the face of adversity, there are those ready to lend a helping hand.
