For security officer Cameron Fox, a routine night at WellSpan York Hospital turned into an unforgettable experience when he helped deliver a baby in the hospital lobby.
An Unexpected Arrival in the Hospital Lobby
It was just after 3:30 a.m. on January 23rd when Abigail and Kyle Bechtel arrived at the hospital. As soon as they reached the entrance, Cameron could tell something urgent was happening.

“I opened the door, and she was loudly asking for help,” he recalled. Within moments, it became clear—Abigail was in active labor and the baby wasn’t going to wait.
A Security Guard Steps Up
Without hesitation, Cameron jumped into action. He put on gloves, knelt down, and assisted in delivering baby Oliver right there in the hospital lobby.
At 3:39 a.m., baby Oliver was born, weighing 7 pounds, 11 ounces.
“There really wasn’t a whole lot going through my mind except making sure she and the baby were OK, safe, and cared for until further trained personnel could arrive,” Cameron shared.
A Grateful Family and a Memorable Moment
Although the new parents were busy adjusting to life with their newborn, hospital staff confirmed that mom and baby were doing well. Later, the Bechtels reunited with Cameron to express their gratitude.
“They were very thankful, very gracious people,” Cameron said. “But for me, this is why I do this job—I enjoy being there and helping people, no matter how big or small the situation.”
