Portland City Council has voted to allocate an additional $8.5 million to its existing security contract with Allied Universal Security Services, which provides security officers for city facilities. This move extends the contract by three years, through 2027, increasing the total contract value to $24 million.
As previously reported, city officials managing the new government transition have faced challenges in standardizing security protocols across the four new voting districts, where the 2025 City Council members will have offices. According to city staff, standardizing the current system would be prohibitively expensive. The current security setup, including security officers, cameras, and badge access, is supported by a fiber network connected above and below ground.
“This contract extension and increased funding will enable the City to meet the rising service requests from various bureaus, ensure business continuity during the government transition, and assist City leadership in developing and implementing a comprehensive citywide security division,” the ordinance states.
