In a dramatic encounter at a Colorado Springs store, a burglary suspect was shot and injured by a security guard after attacking another guard with a hammer. The incident occurred overnight in the 300 block of Bijou, just west of the interstate.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), the suspect, identified as Travis Crane, had already broken into several stores before confronting the security guards. The confrontation escalated when Crane, armed with a hammer, encountered the guards at one of the locations.
“A security guard at one location attempted to stop the suspect, who was armed with a hammer,” a CSPD lieutenant reported. In response, Crane immediately struck one of the guards with the hammer, causing injuries.
A second security guard then confronted Crane. Despite the initial attack, Crane continued to advance while still armed. In response to the imminent threat, the second security guard fired his gun, hitting Crane.
Both the injured guard and Crane were transported to a hospital for treatment. Fortunately, the injuries sustained by both parties were not life-threatening.
Once discharged from the hospital, Crane will face further consequences, as the police have indicated that he will be taken into custody at the El Paso County jail. This incident underscores the risks security professionals face and the swift actions they sometimes must take to protect themselves and others.
