With more than 1,200 public school districts, Texas has a vast and diverse education landscape. As the back-to-school season kicks off, the safety and security of students, faculty, and staff remain a top priority for districts across the state. However, school security processes have often varied widely between districts, making consistency in safety measures a challenge.

To address these differences, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) introduced a new system in late July called Sentinel, aimed at standardizing the collection, processing, storage, and distribution of school safety and security information.

Key Features of Sentinel

One of the most significant improvements Sentinel offers is the standardization of Behavioral Threat Assessments (BTAs). BTAs are critical tools that help identify individuals who may pose a threat to schools. Previously, districts had different approaches to these assessments, but Sentinel provides a unified reporting mechanism, making it easier for schools to conduct, manage, and respond to potential threats consistently.

In addition to BTAs, Sentinel provides districts with key information on state-mandated safety initiatives, such as:

  • Intruder detection audits
  • District vulnerability assessments
  • Emergency management protocols

The system also integrates data from different sources and offers tools and resources to assist district safety and security officials in their planning and response efforts.

Enhanced Communication and Collaboration

Sentinel’s mass communication capabilities are another critical feature. This allows schools to be quickly informed of any local or statewide emergencies, ensuring timely and coordinated responses across Texas.

The implementation of Sentinel represents a major step toward improving school security across the state. By standardizing procedures and improving communication, the system will help school officials stay informed and better prepared to handle the fast-evolving challenges of school safety.
