The demand for security guards has surged, placing the profession on LinkedIn’s 2025 Jobs on the Rise list for the first time. The increase is driven by multiple factors, including reduced police forces, the expanding cannabis industry, and a resurgence of in-person activities. Additionally, the high-profile shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in late 2024 has heightened corporate concerns about executive and employee safety, further fueling the need for professional security services.

Growing Demand for Security Guards in the Corporate World

For years, security guards have been an overlooked profession in LinkedIn’s annual report, which tracks the fastest-growing jobs in the U.S. over the past three years. However, the rising number of high-profile security incidents has changed that.

Andrew Seaman, news editor for jobs and career development at LinkedIn, notes that the profession’s rise can be attributed to several factors, including staffing shortages in law enforcement, increased security needs in the cannabis industry, and a post-pandemic return to physical workplaces and events.

The UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting in December 2024 further underscored the need for heightened corporate security, leading to a surge in demand for security services among Fortune 500 companies and other high-profile businesses.

Companies Increasing Investments in Security

Corporate leaders are now reassessing their security strategies to ensure their executives and employees are protected from potential threats.

“We’re getting calls from everybody,” said Glen Kucera, president of enhanced protection services at Allied Universal. “Demand for security services follows major events. When a high-profile incident occurs, companies realize they need to take proactive steps to protect their executives and staff.”

Former Boeing chief security officer Dave Komendat echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that boards and CEOs are now questioning their current security measures. “This is one of those incidents that causes people to stop and evaluate their existing security programs,” he said.

LinkedIn’s Fastest-Growing Jobs of 2025

While security guards ranked tenth on LinkedIn’s fastest-growing jobs list, other positions were more predictable, particularly in the tech sector.

  • AI engineers and AI consultants took the top spots, reflecting the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence in business operations.
  • Physical therapists ranked third due to increasing demand for healthcare services.
  • Workforce development managers placed fourth as businesses focus on employee growth and retention.
  • Travel advisors and event coordinators entered the list as demand for in-person experiences continues to rebound post-pandemic.

The inclusion of security guards in this ranking highlights the growing emphasis on workplace safety, particularly as companies seek to protect their assets, employees, and leadership teams from emerging threats.

Conclusion

The recognition of security guards as a top-growing profession signals a paradigm shift in corporate security priorities. With an increasing number of organizations prioritizing safety, the industry is expected to continue growing in the years to come.
