As Arkansas schools reopen, Pine Bluff School District has taken a significant step to enhance safety by arming its security officers. This decision comes as parents nationwide are increasingly worried about school safety following incidents like the 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
The Pine Bluff School District aims to be proactive in light of the increasing number of active shooter situations across the country. Although no such incidents have occurred within the district, security director Foster Baker emphasizes the importance of preparedness. He states, “We need to be able to protect our staff and students should there ever be a threat on one of our campuses.”

This school year, 13 out of the district’s 23 security officers will be armed, with plans for all officers to be armed by next year. The armed officers will be strategically placed across campuses to reduce response times to potential threats. While police response times can range from three to seven minutes, armed officers on-site could act immediately
The decision to arm officers was not taken lightly. Officers must undergo 60 hours of rigorous training and pass multiple background checks, including checks by state police, the FBI, and child maltreatment screenings. Despite the extensive preparation, Baker hopes the officers never have to use their weapons. “We want to keep our staff and students safe, which is why we made this decision,” he explained.
Community feedback has been positive, with many parents feeling reassured that the district is taking measures to protect their children. Baker added, “People are happy that we’re prepared to stop a threat and potentially save lives.”
