Rapper Killer Mike, known for his solo work and as half of Run the Jewels, has filed a lawsuit against S&S Labor Force following his arrest at the 2024 Grammy Awards. The artist, whose real name is Michael Render, is suing for false arrest, assault, battery, and emotional distress, claiming he was wrongfully detained and humiliated after winning three awards that night.
The Incident at the Grammys
On February 4, 2024, Render won Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance at the Grammys. However, as he moved backstage towards the red carpet area, he was confronted by security personnel. Render described the situation as an encounter with an “overzealous security guard” who allegedly ignored his attempts to clarify his identity and purpose for being in the secured area.

The lawsuit alleges that multiple security guards then surrounded and physically restrained him, causing emotional distress and public humiliation.
No Charges Filed, but a Lawsuit Moves Forward
Following the arrest, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office decided in July 2024 not to file charges against Killer Mike. However, Render is now seeking a trial and damages, arguing that the security firm’s actions were unjustified and harmful.
Security Firm Denies Involvement
S&S Labor Force, also operating as JRM Security, has denied any wrongdoing. The company acknowledges that it provided security for the event but claims it had “zero involvement” in the incident.
A spokesperson for S&S Labor Force released a statement:
“S&S Labor Force Inc takes pride in our commitment to ethical practices and the safety of our employees, clients, and guests. We have thorough protocols in place to ensure all actions taken by our security personnel adhere to the law and our company standards. The claim in question appears to be based on misinformation and lacks credible evidence.”
The company has also stated that it is conducting an internal investigation into the allegations.
Killer Mike’s Response
In July 2024, Render released a song titled “Humble Me,” reflecting on his arrest experience. Lyrics from the track suggest he felt unfairly treated, comparing himself to Daniel in the lions’ den and referencing prayer as his response to the situation. The song is featured on his album, Michael & the Mighty Midnight Revival: Songs for Sinners and Saints.
The Bigger Picture: Security and High-Profile Events
This lawsuit highlights the complex role of private security at major events, particularly regarding protocols, training, and decision-making under pressure.
Security firms must ensure their personnel:
- Properly verify identities before taking action
- Undergo de-escalation training to handle high-stress situations without excessive force
- Follow legal protocols to prevent wrongful detainment and potential liability
For high-profile events, misidentification and poor communication can escalate routine security checks into legal disputes, as seen in this case.
