Minnesota State University’s (MSU) Campus Security Department is currently grappling with significant challenges in hiring and retaining security officers. These difficulties are primarily attributed to wage competition, budget constraints, and the transient nature of student employees.
Wage Competition and Budget Constraints
A major hurdle for MSU’s Campus Security is the inability to offer competitive salaries compared to local police departments and private sector jobs. Director of Security, Sandi Schnorenberg, highlighted that all security personnel are part of bargaining units, resulting in standardized pay across the Minnesota State system. This standardization limits the university’s flexibility in adjusting wages to attract and retain talent.

Additionally, budgetary limitations have led to reductions in training and professional development opportunities. Schnorenberg mentioned that while essential training in defensive tactics, first aid, and de-escalation is maintained, offering external training sessions has become challenging due to financial constraints.
Staffing Levels and Employee Retention
The department faces difficulties in maintaining adequate staffing levels, which impacts work-life balance for existing officers. Efforts are made to honor time-off requests, but sustaining this practice is challenging without sufficient personnel. To address high turnover rates among student employees and those majoring in Policing Studies or Criminal Justice, the department is shifting its hiring focus. Schnorenberg stated that they are now seeking individuals interested in long-term positions within a college environment, rather than those viewing the role as a stepping stone to a police career.

Despite these challenges, MSU’s Campus Security remains dedicated to ensuring campus safety. Schnorenberg expressed optimism, noting that the small, tight-knit team continues to perform effectively. The department is actively seeking solutions to navigate the complex hiring landscape, aiming to provide essential services and foster a supportive environment for both officers and the campus community.
