A security guard helped two residents escape a fire at a duplex in San Rafael early Monday morning, according to city fire officials.
San Rafael Fire Department crews responded at 2:09 a.m. to the fire at 637 Mission Ave., a single-story duplex, and learned that a nearby security guard helped two female occupants escape the building safely.
The fire was declared under control a half-hour later, and firefighters contained it to the front of one unit of the building, which had a vacant second unit, fire officials said.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the two displaced residents, and the animal nonprofit Marin Humane was requested to assist with the residents’ cats, who were uninjured in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Fire Department, in a press release, commended “the selfless and brave actions of the security guard who helped bring the occupants out of the burning building to a safe location. We are proud to serve this amazing community.”
