A security guard was shot multiple times just after noon on Monday on Madison Avenue, according to police.

The 49-year-old victim was shot outside his security job at “The Prince George,” a site that provides affordable housing with supportive services, at East 28th Street and Madison Avenue.

Witness Gabe Monroe, who works steps away, heard it unfold.

“The reason people are so freaked out is [that] this is a very, very, very safe area and this almost never happens here,” Monroe said.

“I heard the shots. They were really loud. I went out. I heard the guy screaming,” Monroe added. “When they took him into the ambulance, he was still moving around and talking and stuff, so I hope he’s OK.”

“Normally, I would be shaken up, but I just found out who it is, so that’s the worst,” a tenant at the building the victim works at said. “Of all the people in this entire building, he’s the most saintly person in the entire building.”

But sources say the shooting may be tied to an ongoing dispute.

In a statement, Breaking Ground, the nonprofit that operates the building, wrote it is “deeply saddened by the incident involving one of our security guards near The Prince George earlier today. Our thoughts are with them and their loved ones, and the safety of our tenants, staff, and community is our top priority.”

According to police, the victim is in stable condition and the investigation is ongoing as they search for a suspect.
