Former Security Guard Recalls Being Scolded by Michael Jordan: “He Told Me I Was Terrible at My Job”

Before he became a well-known actor, Power star Joseph Sikora worked in a very different kind of spotlight, serving as a security guard for high-profile celebrities. One of his more memorable assignments was providing security for basketball legend Michael Jordan. But as Sikora candidly admitted, it was also one of the moments when he failed at his job, at least in MJ’s eyes.

In a revealing interview on The Angie Martinez Show in 2022, Sikora shared how a brief lapse in judgment led to an unexpected dressing-down from the NBA icon.

Getting Too Comfortable on the Job

Sikora worked at a well-known Chicago nightclub called Le Passage, where celebrities like Bill Murray and other A-listers would frequently show up. His job was not just to keep them safe, but also to ensure they could enjoy their night out without being swarmed by fans or interrupted by overzealous partygoers.

“I was working security at a club in Chicago called Le Passage,” Sikora explained. “They assigned me to personal [security] for some of the celebrities that would come, just make sure nobody messes with Bill Murray, you know, and all these people.”

But when Michael Jordan walked in one night, things didn’t go quite as planned.

Sikora recounted a moment when a group of attractive women approached, asking if they could say hello to Jordan. Rather than turning them away, Sikora, perhaps caught up in the charm of the moment, let them through.

“Michael was like, ‘What are you doing? You’re supposed to be making sure nobody comes [over to me],’” Sikora recalled. “He told me I was being terrible at my job, and he was right.”

Michael Jordan’s Guarded Approach to Fame and Fans

Jordan’s reaction wasn’t just about keeping his personal space, it reflects a broader philosophy he developed over the years. Unlike many athletes who openly embraced the party lifestyle, MJ often kept his private life tightly controlled, especially when it came to romantic relationships.

One of the reasons behind that caution dates back to a painful experience in his younger years. As Jordan shared in a past interview with GQ Magazine, he once dated a woman he believed had genuine feelings for him, only to realize she was more interested in his fame and fortune than in who he was as a person.

“It got tired in five, six days,” Jordan said. “I could see it. Right now, I don’t trust no one except my mother.”

That experience left a lasting impact. It’s not surprising, then, that Jordan was especially protective of his personal space and wary of unfamiliar faces, no matter how charming they might seem.

From Mistrust to Marriage: Jordan’s Quiet Personal Life

Despite the challenges in his early romantic life, Michael Jordan eventually found lasting happiness. In 2013, he married Yvette Prieto, a Cuban-American model. Since then, the couple has led a largely private but seemingly joyful life together.

While MJ remains an iconic public figure, he’s continued to avoid the spotlight when it comes to his personal affairs. His marriage to Prieto marks a contrast to his younger days, showing a shift toward stability, privacy, and genuine connection.

A Lesson in Focus and Professionalism

Sikora’s story offers a lighthearted but valuable reminder: even the most routine tasks can become critical moments when dealing with high-profile individuals. For a young security guard, letting his guard down for just a second was all it took to be noticed—and corrected—by one of the most focused athletes in sports history.

And in Sikora’s case, the lesson wasn’t lost. “He was right,” he said, acknowledging that Jordan had every reason to be disappointed in his brief lapse.

Today, Joseph Sikora is better known for his role on the screen than for his security work. But his story about that night at Le Passage offers an inside look at how Michael Jordan carries his standards for privacy and professionalism, even off the court.
