In light of the recent mandate set forth by House Bill 3, school safety remains a critical issue across San Antonio’s major school districts. These districts are actively working to comply with the new legislation, which requires at least one armed security guard to be present during regular school hours. This article explores the various approaches San Antonio districts are taking to enhance security measures and ensure the safety of students and staff.

Implementing Armed Marshals and Safety Specialists

With the new school year fast approaching, one district is set to vote on a plan to place armed marshals on its campuses. This move highlights the ongoing efforts of San Antonio’s largest school districts to bolster security and adhere to the requirements of HB 3.

Northeast ISD has introduced “safety specialist” positions across the district, a measure that has been highly successful. According to Aubrey Chancellor from Northeast ISD, the district has been selective in hiring campus security, focusing on candidates with extensive backgrounds in law enforcement, retired military, and emergency management. Despite the success, approximately 15% of these safety specialist positions remain unfilled, indicating a need for further recruitment.

Challenges and Alternative Approaches

Northside ISD faces similar challenges, with over 120 officers but 40 vacancies in their District Police Department. To address this shortfall, some schools are turning to the school marshal program, which allows current staff to obtain a marshal’s license and carry a firearm on campus. South San ISD trustees recently voted unanimously to implement this program for the upcoming year, opting to arm their employed security officers rather than teachers.

Medina Valley ISD is also considering a similar decision, with trustees set to vote on the implementation of the school marshal program. The outcome of this decision will be closely watched as districts explore different strategies to meet the legislative requirements and enhance school safety.

Commitment to Student and Staff Safety

The concerted efforts of San Antonio’s school districts to comply with HB 3 and improve security measures underscore their commitment to ensuring the safety of students and staff. While challenges remain, the proactive steps taken by these districts highlight their dedication to creating a secure learning environment.

As the new school year approaches, the implementation of these security measures will be crucial in maintaining a safe and protected atmosphere for all members of the school community.
