In Kansas City, Missouri, a public safety officer stationed in the Westport Entertainment District responded to chaos just outside the area and fatally shot a man on early Sunday morning, according to police statements on Monday.
Jahquan M. Robinson, 24, was killed in the shooting, which also left five others injured.
Initial reports indicate that the public safety officer, employed by the Westport Entertainment District, rushed to the vicinity near Westport Road and Broadway upon hearing gunfire.
Police disclosed that Robinson had been engaged in gunfire when the officer arrived.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the officer fired at Robinson, resulting in his injury.
Robinson was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
While the public safety officer was detained on the night of the incident, they were subsequently released pending further investigation.
According to authorities, the shooting occurred following an altercation among a group of individuals.
“Detectives will continue to investigate and compile all of the investigative findings detailing all persons’ involvement and provide those findings to prosecutors for their review,” stated KCPD in a Sunday release.
On Monday, a representative for the Westport District issued a statement regarding the incident.
“The Westport Entertainment District is grateful for its Westport Public Safety officers and KCPD officers who bravely responded to an active shooter outside the Entertainment District boundaries at 1:20 AM Sunday and saved people’s lives,” the statement read. “The active shooter was unresponsive at the scene and later died. Unfortunately, shootings can happen anywhere, yet we are fortunate to have officers trained to respond and address the threat to public safety.”
