Leston Scafe, affectionately known as Sugar, has become a familiar face through his appearances on Channel 4’s “24 Hours in A&E,” which highlights the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. Despite his imposing 6ft stature, Scafe describes himself as a “big teddy” who is passionate about his role. “I love my job,” he expressed. “I enjoy helping people, especially the vulnerable individuals in the hospital who truly need assistance.”
Award-Winning Dedication
Scafe’s commitment has earned him the title of Security Officer of the Year from the National Association of Healthcare Security Awards. Transitioning from a prison officer to hospital security five years ago, the 51-year-old from Kirkby in Ashfield emphasizes the importance of kindness in his work. “To be an effective security guard, you must be genuine and compassionate,” he noted. “Treating others with respect ensures fair treatment in return.”
Addressing Rising Challenges
The Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust reported over 1,800 incidents of aggression, violence, and harassment in 2022-23, marking a 50% increase from the previous year. Scafe approaches such challenges with empathy. “If someone is confrontational, I strive to show them a better way,” he said. “By treating them with respect, they often reciprocate, leading to a harmonious environment.”
Navigating Daily Risks
Despite his positive demeanor, Scafe acknowledges the inherent dangers of his job, as evidenced by the 15lb stab vest he wears daily. “We wear this in all conditions; it’s part of the job,” he explained. He also highlights the importance of teamwork: “I have great colleagues, and together, we ensure the safety of staff and patients.”
Embracing Unexpected Fame
Scafe’s television appearances have unexpectedly elevated his profile. “Initially, no one else wanted to be on camera, so I agreed,” he recalled. “Now, I’ve grown accustomed to it and often forget the cameras are there.” His newfound recognition has shifted perceptions of his role, showcasing that it’s not solely about managing conflicts but also about enhancing hospital operations. Receiving the Security Officer of the Year award was a significant honor for Scafe. “It was epic; I was over the moon,” he shared. “I owe my achievements to the managers and staff who have supported me along the way.”

I worship with him in a church called ” Seventh Day Adventist Church located at No 1, Ragdale Road in Bulwell.
Sugar is always bright, friendly, approachable and respectful to people despite his size and height.
He is quite warm and smiles all the time- no wander he is nicknamed “Sugar”. One can hardly believe is a security officer. He is hefty on the outside and very soft at heart- like a cuddly Teddy bear He calls himself.
