For most visitors, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is a place to admire some of the world’s greatest masterpieces. But for Armia Khalil, a security guard at the museum, it became the place where his own work of art would eventually be displayed.
From Egypt to the Met: A Journey of Passion and Perseverance
Originally from Egypt, Khalil arrived in the United States with nothing more than $400 and a suitcase filled with sculpting tools. His dream was to become a professional sculptor. However, as many aspiring artists discover, breaking into the art world wasn’t easy.

With no clear plan and limited opportunities, Khalil took a job in 2012 as a security guard at the Met, working among the very artworks that inspired him. While he couldn’t showcase his own creations at the time, he found comfort in being surrounded by masterpieces, never expecting that one day his own work would be included among them.
A Chance Encounter That Changed Everything
Khalil’s big break came unexpectedly. A couple of years ago, he struck up a conversation with a visitor, casually mentioning that he was an artist from Egypt. What he didn’t know was that the person he was speaking to was Akili Tommasino, a curator in the Met’s Department of Modern and Contemporary Art.
Tommasino had spent six years searching for exceptional modern art inspired by Ancient Egypt. He had scoured galleries and studios across different countries, looking for pieces to include in a special exhibition. Yet, after years of searching, the perfect piece turned out to be created by someone working right inside the museum.
“When Armia mentioned he was Egyptian, I asked if I could see his work,” Tommasino recalled. “At that point, I revealed my identity.”
A Sculpture That Captivated the Museum
Khalil’s sculpture, which he meticulously carved from a single piece of ash wood over five months, was selected for inclusion in the exhibition. The moment was surreal for the artist, who had once thought his dreams were out of reach.
Visitors to the Met are now stopping by the exhibit specifically to see Khalil’s work, transforming him from a security guard into a rising star in the art world.
The Only Security Guard Protecting His Own Artwork
With his sculpture on display, Khalil has gained unexpected recognition. Visitors request photos with him, and he’s become something of a celebrity within the museum walls. As the only security guard watching over his own work, his story is an inspiration to artists everywhere.
Even the museum’s curators acknowledge that his days as a security guard might be numbered. “We might lose him as a security guard,” Tommasino joked. “But we might gain a new master.”
For Khalil, this opportunity has turned what once seemed like an impossible dream into reality—proving that talent, perseverance, and a little bit of luck can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
